Buying Furniture in Exmouth? Check These Details Before Booking Collection

A furniture listing can show that an item is attractive without showing whether it can be collected safely. Before arranging a courier from an Exmouth seller, establish the dimensions, weight, condition and route out of the property. The purchase agreement and the transport booking are separate arrangements: the courier should not arrive to discover that the seller has not released the item.

Get measurements that describe the real load

Ask for the full height, width and depth of each piece, including any fixed legs, handles or projecting parts. If dismantling is proposed, confirm who will do it before collection and provide the dimensions of the resulting pieces. Do not give the dimensions of a similar model found online unless the seller has verified that they match the actual item.

Ask about weight and construction. A solid sideboard, glass-topped table and flat-pack cabinet can need different protection and handling even when their measurements are similar. Send clear photographs where useful, but keep written dimensions and a description with the enquiry.

Check the route from room to vehicle

Tell BHA which floor the item is on, whether there is a suitable lift and whether it must pass through tight turns or narrow doors. Confirm the nearest permitted loading point and the carry distance. Include the same information for the delivery address. A room-placement request needs more planning than a handover at an accessible ground-floor entrance.

Explain what help the seller and buyer can provide without assuming it substitutes for an agreed handling crew. Additional people, lifting equipment or protective packaging may need arranging. The vehicle and handling method must be suitable for the whole movement.

Make release and condition clear

Agree payment and ownership matters directly with the seller before dispatch. Give the courier booking contact a collection reference or clear item description, the seller’s name and telephone number, and a confirmed availability window. A marketplace messaging thread alone may not give the driver a reliable way to reach the person releasing the goods.

Ask the seller to identify existing damage and photograph the item before collection. Agree suitable protection with BHA. Collection photographs can help record visible condition, but they are not a full inspection or a guarantee that concealed defects do not exist.

Request a quotation before assuming a bargain will travel cheaply

Send BHA the collection and delivery postcodes, load details, access information and timing. See South West coverage for Exmouth and the furniture access and handling guide, then request a transport quotation. For flexible dates, ask whether economy transport is suitable and available. This practical checklist is general guidance, not evidence of a specific local seller relationship. Reviewed 16 October 2026.
