London Courier Deliveries: Loading Access and Vehicle Checks Before Booking

A London courier quotation should be based on the actual collection and delivery arrangement, not just the distance between two postcodes. Loading access, building procedures and vehicle requirements can determine whether the proposed movement is practical. Sharing these details early helps BHA assess the job before a vehicle is committed.

Give the loading address as well as the business address

For an office, shop or shared building, ask for the entrance used by delivery vehicles. Include the street, gate, loading bay reference and any booking requirement. The address shown on a company’s website may lead to a customer reception rather than its goods entrance. If the building uses a separate loading area, the driver needs that instruction before arrival.

Transport for London publishes freight and servicing guidance covering parking, loading and efficient deliveries. Street signs and the relevant highway authority’s current rules still govern the actual stopping point. Do not assume that a short delivery automatically permits waiting, or that a loading bay will be available when the driver arrives.

Keep road charges separate from site access

Ask the courier to check any applicable vehicle and charging requirements for the proposed route. This is different from obtaining building access or a loading appointment. A vehicle can meet a road scheme’s requirements and still be unsuitable for a low entrance or a site with a vehicle-length limit.

Send the height, width and length restrictions supplied by the premises. For a bulky load, state whether goods must pass through a lift or narrow doorway after unloading. Do not select a smaller vehicle purely to fit an entrance unless the packed load and payload also fit safely.

Agree a realistic receiving window

Provide the time the goods will be ready, the receiving hours and any fixed appointment. If the destination needs an advance vehicle registration or driver details, flag that before booking. A requested deadline is assessed against the complete journey and available vehicle, not the road distance alone.

Tell BHA who can authorise a change if a bay is blocked or reception cannot accept the load. The driver should have a clear escalation contact rather than being expected to choose another recipient or leave goods unattended. Agree what evidence is required when the handover is complete.
